Proofreading
Proofreading is, contrary to perception, the final step of the publishing process. The following are among the elements covered in the Proofreading services of The Write Way.
- Design elements for accuracy and consistency, includng headers, level heads, page numbering, word breaks, end-of-line breaks, page numbering, cross references, and appropriate placement of tables and artwork.
- A line-by-line comparison with the original layout to ensure all errors have been caught. May include completion of table of contents and index, and numbering of cross-references.
Copyediting
The Write Way will check and standardize grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency of mechanics and facts. Copyediting also includes cover copy, front and back matter, and spot-checking references. Continuous dialog with the writer/designer is critical during this process.
Light copyediting contains the following elements: spelling and grammar check, capitalization, punctuation, table of contents, cross-references check (when applicable), table and figure numbers, and numbered lists. In a light edit, comments are not made about content or style; nor are facts, quotes or references checked.
Medium copyediting includes everything mentioned under light copyediting, as well as ensuring correctness and consistency of items such as numbers, abbreviations, gender neutrality, content and style, specifically: Audience, Logic and clarity, and Usage. In a medium edit, comments are made about content or styles. Facts, quotes and references are also checked.
Substantive or Structural Editing
Ideally, your written work should match the reading level of your targeted audience. Structural editing focuses on logical organization and flow of content to render your document clear, concise and easy to read. A structural edit will ensure your foundation makes sense, your plan develops in a compelling fashion and your information is conveyed accurately. The Write Way can assist you in clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon and clichés, smoothing language, and polish in your distinct style. This may include checking or correcting reading level.
